Online Trading Platforms - What is CFD Trading

These brokers offer CFD trading in a range of markets and on various online trading platforms. They include currency trading platforms and platforms at UK brokers. But what is CFD trading ?

What does CFD stand for ?

CFD stands for Contract for Difference.

What is a Contract for Difference ?

As its name suggests it is a contract between the trader and the CFD provider to exchange the difference between the value of an underlying market at the opening and close of the contract.

Does the trader own an underlying market when trading CFDs ?

The trader does not own the underlying market. The CFD bases its value on the value of the underlying market.

What is the point of a CFD ?

It allows the trader to speculate on the movement in value of a market, i.e. to trade it, without owning it. It enables flexible leverage (however increasing leverage increases risk) and the capacity to go short as well as long.

Is spread betting the same as CFD trading ?

Spread betting which is available at some brokers in the UK, is not the same as CFD trading, but in both cases, the trader is speculating on the value of a market, without owning it.
