Both brokers offer MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and the successor to MT4, MetaTrader 5 (MT5). Each broker allows the use of Expert Advisors (EAs), MT4 and MT5's automated trading strategies (robots).

With MT4 and MT5 the trader can execute their own trades or have robots execute trades for them, in accordance with the rules laid out in the strategy. While the trader may use ones already built, they can also modify them or build their own. MT4 and MT5 have a set of technical indicators built into the platform, but more can be added and the trader can also modify them or build their own.

AvaTrade provides trading in FX Options on a separate platform, AvaOptions and additionally provides a user friendly web trader. Each broker offers CFD trading, but in the UK, AvaTrade also provides MT4 spread betting.
